What Is Artificial Reality?

The term was first coined in 1969 by Myron Kruger, a pioneering researcher in interactive environments. Kruger used it to describe his work on immersive, interactive systems that would later evolve into what we now recognize as Virtual Reality. He later published a book titled Artificial Reality, further solidifying the term’s association with his research.

Kruger clarified this new technology when he stated “In this medium, the computer perceives a participant’s actions and responds in real-time with visual and auditory displays”. Given this definition, Artificial Reality is not limited to Virtual Reality (VR) alone. It encompasses a wide spectrum of digital environments and interactive experiences that fall within the Virtual Continuum, a concept that includes all forms of computer-generated realities. From Augmented Reality (AR) to fully immersive VR, Artificial Reality refers to any environment that blends digital elements with human perception and is otherwise known as Extended Reality (XR).

Additionally, XR is different from VR in that it includes any part of the Virtual Continuum other than reality itself. Everything from AR to VR is considered Artificial Reality.

Although XR and VR are often used interchangeably, they are not the same. VR refers specifically to fully immersive digital environments where users are completely separated from the physical world. XR, on the other hand, is a broader concept that includes multiple forms of interactive digital experiences.

  • Artificial Reality is an umbrella term that includes all digital environments apart from real-world experiences. A synonym to Extended Reality (XR).
  • Virtual Reality (VR) is a fully immersive digital experience that isolates users from physical reality.
  • Augmented Reality (AR), which overlays digital elements onto the real world, is also considered a form of Artificial Reality.
  • Mixed Reality (MR), which blends physical and digital worlds more interactively, falls under Artificial Reality as well.
